Here at ACCORD, A Center for Dispute Resolution we help community members resolve disputes and settle out of court using mediation and peaceful dispute resolution practices. We offer basic mediation training to begin, and continuing education classes to keep you up to date and keep expanding your skills. These tools are practical and useful not only in the mediation field, but also in professional and everyday life. We invite volunteers to support our community meal every Saturday at Binghamton's First Congregational Church. Volunteers are welcome between 11:00am and 4:00pm to help with food preparation, set up, serving meals, washing dishes and clean up.

TechWorks! is looking to restart our Retro Techno Bistro! These events will be held Thursday nights from 5-8pm. The Retro Techno Bistro will be a meet & greet / open house where folks can have wine, beer and peanuts/snacks, and learn about the TechWorks! museum, network with others, and try out the technology!

We are seeking a volunteer to host the Retro Techno Bistro (like hosting a dinner party, but without having to cook!) and procure the drinks and snacks. A stipend of $25 per night / $100 per month hosted is available.

Video Game Cataloging

Review and test TechWorks! collection of vintage video games from1980s – 2000 for visitors to play on original game hardware. Classify games as for multiple vs single players and as suitable for teens and families. Write up instructions for game play and winning strategies for games on team’s Favorites List. Teams with at least one gamer from the 1990s will get more accomplished and have more fun

Gardening

The TechWorks! building exterior needs a little TLC: trimming, weeding, and planting. Work clothes and shoes, aka “grubbies” plus hats and sunscreen recommended. TechWorks! will provide work gloves and nylon pullovers, plus hand tools, rakes, shovels, pruning tools, and yard waste bags for City pickup. Optionally, volunteers might bring their preferred tools for trimming branches

Volunteers of America's Emergency Shelter needs personal hygiene items for our residents.  Please consider holding a drive to collect new toiletries, including shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant for people staying at our shelter. 

Volunteers of America needs volunteers to teach personal budgeting skills to individuals staying in our shelter and housing programs.  

Visit with residents in our over 250 bed facility. Spend quality time with seniors of all ages, and cognitive levels. Provide companionship, visiting, reading stories/magazines, playing cards, bingo, any game of interest, listening to music, reminisce visits (discussion about past history/ current interests), making residents feel special.   

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to support our Gardening Club, a youth-centered program focused on learning, teamwork, and healthy living through gardening. Volunteers will: Assist the program facilitator with presenting gardening lessons and activities. Help maintain garden beds and overall garden upkeep. Support youth participants and ensure a safe, engaging environment at all times. Volunteers must be reliable, enjoy working with youth, and be comfortable outdoors. Background checks are required prior to volunteering.

Volunteering in senior living community to provide entertainment for residents who enjoy music, dancing, gentle music, parties, calm sensory music.  Resident's enjoy listening to music during meal times. Experience with guitar, piano, singing, just entertaining and making others happy.

One-on-One and lab tutors are needed to work with adult students on their individual literacy goals including reading, writing, pronunciation,  math, English Language and digital literacy skills. Resident's need assistance to and from programming (transport in wheel chairs), help with programming (example, Bingo). If resident has physical or cognitive impairment, volunteers can be used to help on a 1:1 basis to fulfill task. Volunteer can sit with resident to develop new friendships/companionship for residents who have minimal family. Volunteers can be needed to bring residents outdoors in nice weather, help with spiritual visits/social programming.

NoMa invites community members to donate hygiene supplies and run supply drives.

Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers, age 18 and older, to deliver meals to clients once a week. Routes are available throughout Broome County. Meals on Wheels provides warm, nourishing meals Monday through Friday. Many Meals on Wheels participants are homebound. Faith in Action Volunteers Serving Seniors is seeking a grocery shopper to help increase food access for seniors. The shopper would be required to grocery shop for the client weekly, bi-weekly or monthly on a predetermined day and time.  This position is ongoing with shoppers and clients matched up for extended periods of time (some have been together for over 16 years.).  The shopper would go to the clients home, collect their grocery list and payment, go to the store and shop, and then return with and put away the groceries. Each "shop" should take no longer than 2 hours. A form stating how long the shop took, the miles driven, and the amount spent would need to be signed before the form was then sent on to FIAV via email, fax or mail.  These forms are needed back to us by the following 5th of each month.

Requirements:

In order to volunteer, the shopper would need to fill out a simple form, consent to and pass a background check, and provide a copy of their DL and insurance. A car is required. The shopper also needs to be able to climb stairs, carry groceries and put them away where needed.

The Bridge Community Center is located in downtown Johnson City, just down the street from Wilson Hospital. The Bridge houses many programs and community resources to families and neighbors. Throughout the school year we operate a free After School Program for kids ages 3-18 years. This program includes classes the kids can choose from: STEM, arts and crafts, dance, cooking, and various activities in our gym. Every program includes a family style dinner so we can connect with one another. There are also various events throughout the year to celebrate accomplishments, support families with needs, and come together as a community.

We are looking for community members that are passionate about the potential that lies within the next generation. The commitment would include: volunteering your time once per week (Tuesday or Thursday) during the program hours, once per month training and team meeting, and involvement in at least one of our special events in the year. A background check and interview is required for a volunteer to be accepted as a mentor in the program.

Ongoing need for Board of Directors 

Faith in Action, within the Broome County Council of Churches, is currently seeking out volunteers to help aging individuals within the Broome County community. There has been a shortage of volunteers this last year, but the number of individuals in need of our assistance has increased. Please consider volunteering with Faith in Action!

The current tasks we need the most help with include driving individuals to medical appointments, grocery shopping and errands. Volunteer drivers will typically need 2 hours per ride to take the individual to their appointment/shopping and then to take them home. Faith in Action does not expect volunteers to complete a certain number of hours per week; any number of rides volunteers can provide each month is appreciated, especially by our older community members in need. Most rides are scheduled ONLY during the week, with few exceptions for weekend rides. Please take this into account while you consider volunteer opportunities with Faith in Action.

The American Civic Association is looking for volunteers to help with their Refugee Reception and Placement (R&P) program. As part of this program we welcome new community members into Broome County and the surrounding area and help them start to build stability so they can achieve long term success in their new home. This program begins before refugees arrive in the US and assists them for their first 90 days after arrival in attaining self sufficiency.

The Foster Grandparent Program is looking for volunteers 55 or over to become a classroom mentor in a local elementary school, Head Start program, or daycare center. A classroom "grandparent" works one on one with a child sharing in classroom activities such as reading books together, practicing the alphabet, and solving math problems. No prior experience in a classroom is needed! You will receive a stipend of $4.00 for each hour that you volunteer, plus travel reimbursement and a free lunch at school each day. Lead guided tours of the historic Phelps Mansion Museum.  The museum is open Friday- Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. Shifts need are 11-2 or 2-5 each day we are open. Full training is provided and scheduling is flexible.

Rise is seeking a long-term volunteer who would be interested in providing childcare for the children residing in our domestic violence shelter.  The care would be provided for 1-2 hour durations while their parents attend counseling and other appointments.  Some hours would be regular while other times would be on an as needed basis.  The care would be provided at our building during the hours of 8am-4pm.

The volunteer would be subject to a criminal background check and statewide central register check.  The ideal candidate would have experience working with children and an understanding of child trauma.
