The VITA program provides free tax preparation to eligible individuals and families. This program ensures clients receive all the tax credits they are eligible for and helps improve the financial stability of eligible clients. For many households, these returns are vital and depended on to cover basic costs.
We are seeking 1-2 volunteers to greet clients and assist with intake at the reception desk. The volunteer opportunity begins in late January and runs through late April. 2 shifts are available weekly, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Ideally, one person would cover both the Tuesday and the Thursday shifts. There are no shifts during Binghamton University's spring break from 3/2 through 3/9. We are happy to work with students to fulfill internship requirements as well.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the VITA Site Coordinator and volunteer tax preparers by helping to ensure each taxpayer has the necessary information required to complete his/her return
- Assist at the reception desk and with client intake
- Ensure each taxpayer has brought the necessary information and documents
- Review customer information to determine the type of assistance they will need
- Assist in making copies of proper IDs, forms, documents, etc.
- Maintain confidentiality of customer information
QUALIFICATIONS:QUALIFICATIONS:
- Desire to help others, attention to detail
- Ability to work with sensitive information and act with confidentiality
- A service-oriented attitude and tact in dealing with clients
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Basic computer knowledge required
- Knowledge of Google Docs and Excel preferred
- The applicant should be friendly, dependable, flexible, and a team-player
EDUCATION:
- No previous experience or certification is required! Training will be provided for this role.
- A passed certification test, upon completion of the training.
