Volunteer: Volunteer Engagement Committee Member

We're looking for dedicated, connected and enthusiastic volunteers to serve on our Strategic Volunteer Engagement Committee (SVEC) & bolster volunteerism in our community!

In conjunction with United Way staff and volunteers, the Strategic Volunteer Engagement Committee is responsible for coordinating the overall implementation of United Way of Broome County volunteer events. These might include Day of Action, Day of Caring, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, National Volunteer Week, and the National Days of Service & Remembrance.

Responsibilities and Duties

Members of the Strategic Volunteer Engagement Committee are expected to…

Attend monthly SVEC meetings between March and November of each yearAssist in executing United Way of Broome County’s days of service by contributing in one or more of the following ways:Using their professional and community connections to recruit volunteers, projects, and businesses to participate in the days of serviceDropping off materials and conducting site visits at project sitesPacking t-shirt orders for individual volunteers and volunteer groupsVisiting project sites during the days of service to thank volunteers and take photosServing a two-year termCommitting to a maximum of 15-20 hours of service per yearAbiding by the Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest statements (listed below)

Qualifications

Membership is open to individuals who fit one or more of the following criteria:

Has a background in volunteer management/community engagementHas strong community connections Demonstrates passion for United Way of Broome County’s mission and a strong commitment to service 

Confidentiality

SVEC members have a responsibility not to disclose information and to treat all information received in their functions as confidential. Any unauthorized access to the organization, donor, employee, community partner, or client information is prohibited and will be considered a breach of confidentiality. Such breach of confidentiality extends to having, communicating, or distributing such information electronically, in hard copy, or in any other form except in the process of carrying out duties as an SVEC member.

Conflicts of Interest

SVEC members are required to disclose all agencies they are affiliated with, both professionally and voluntarily. SVEC members who are also employed by or members of the boards of affiliated organizations are encouraged to disclose that relationship should discussions around that specific organization take place, in keeping with the intent to make everyone aware of potential conflicts of interest.

Volunteer: Grant Review Member / Impact Council Member

Impact Council Members will assist United Way of Broome County in supporting the Strategic Community Grants Program. Impact Council Members will work with United Way of Broome County staff to review applications and recommend which applicants will receive funding to address barriers to Health Communities, Youth Opportunity, and Financial Security.

Impact Councils meet approximately 3 times between February and April each year. Meetings typically take place during regular business hours.

The goals of each area of the grant program are as follows:

Healthy Communities: Improving health and wellbeing for all.

Long-Term Outcomes:

Reduce the rate of potentially preventable hospitalizationsReduce the percentage of adults reporting 14 or more days of poor mental health per month Reduce the rate of indicated reports of child abuse

Youth Opportunity: Helping young people realize their full potential.

Long-Term Outcomes:

Increase the percentage of children enrolled in early childcareDecrease the chronic absenteeism rate among elementary, middle, and high school studentsIncrease post-secondary preparedness by increasing the post-secondary enrollment rate and the percentage of each graduating class with a CDOS or CTE diploma.

Financial Stability: Creating a stronger financial future for every generation.

Long-Term Outcomes:

Reduce the percentage of the population living below the ALICE threshold Reduce the percentage of renter-occupied units in which gross rent is 30% or more of household incomeReduce the percentage of the population who lacks adequate access to food

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Attending an Impact Council orientation once per funding yearReviewing grant proposalsMaking recommendations on what programs best align with the Strategic Priorities Grants ProgramRecommending funding amounts for selected programsAttending at least 50% of review meetings, annuallyAttending at least two program site visits, annuallyServing a two-year termCommitting to 20-30 hours of service per year

This position plays a critical role in the Community Investment Process of the United Way of Broome County (UWBC).  The primary role of the UWBC Capacity Building Committee Member is to ensure the effective implementation of community-based programs & projects designed to strengthen the capacity of local nonprofits to address the ever-evolving challenges and opportunities facing our community.  The Capacity Building Committee Member is responsible for working in partnership with UWBC staff and community stakeholders to review, recommend funding to, and monitor a range of projects & programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in training and orientation meetings Become familiar with UWBC’s Strategic Priorities and Collective Impact Initiatives Complete an online individual review of grant applications Attend and participate in Capacity Building Committee meetings Help determine recommendations (with accompanying rationale) regarding the investment for each project & program the Capacity Building Committee decides to fund Provide feedback to UWBC staff regarding the investment process
